Some Favourite Restaurants in Provence - Part 1

There are, quite literally, thousands of restaurants in Provence!

In the past two decades, we have tried to try, as many people as possible - but we are beginning to recognize that we've barely scratched the surface!

Here are some short notes are only a selection of restaurants we have eaten (and enjoyed!) Over the past few years.

Most of them are in the Vaucluse and Bouches-du-Rhone regions of Provence (our favorite punching) reasons, but with theoccasional excursion into the Var and Alpes Maritimes.

Some (not all) of the restaurants have their own websites. This includes photos, sample menus, wine lists, etc. One or two even have virtual tours and online booking facilities.

Please note these are not random, informal places. While the men can not be expected to wear a jacket and tie (except at the Louis XV in Monaco), you can go wrong with something when you are in jeans and sneakers, are again considered. Targetfor a smart casual look, and you should be fine. And it is always a good idea to reserve a table in advance by telephone.

The arrangement is alphabetical by location.

Avignon is a popular institution, the local business people and families, with its more than60 years (even now) under new management and with a new boss. It is rather inconguously located on a shop on the main street of Avignon, but do not be deterred. The prices are very reasonable and the food is tasty and plentiful. A good place for Sunday lunch.

This charming hotel / restaurant is the younger and (slightly) cheaper brother of the famous L'Oustau de Baumaniere (see above), just down the street. The beautiful surroundings, excellent food and attentive service is recommended.

There are a variety of fish and seafood restaurants along the colorful, bustling port of this delightful little town. This is a little more sophisticated and up-market than most, with their bright Italian furnishings, friendly staff, good food and superb local wines, ChairOver by the charming, eagle-eyed, unflappable Bruno. You can find most of the classic fish and seafood of Provence here: bouillabaisse, Bourride, sea bass, sea bream, red mullet, prawns, etc. In any case, one of our personal favorites. Highly recommended. (Stop press: three outstanding state-of-the-art rooms with breathtaking views of the harbor and the cliffs above were just added. Also check the website for photos andDetails.)

CAVAILLON:

Avenue de Verdun

A bit misleading, this is hardly a bistro meal, but a very upscale restaurant. The prices are quite reasonable for the variety and quality of food on offer and the wine list is a veritable treasure trove of local wines. (Stop Press: This restaurant has just been awarded its second Michelin star!)

L'ISLE SUR LASORGUE:

Young super-chef Daniel Lift up - that made such a name in the luxury Hotel de la Mirande in Avignon a few years ago - now has to load itself into this beautiful, ancient city. This is a much simpler, more informal place, with the occasional flourish but haute cuisine. Lovely, imaginative, fresh cuisine with little (if any) election. Four courses for about 40 euros. Do not miss it!
